Glen Breton Whisky has created a commemorative single malt whisky for the 80th anniversary of the creation of the Special Operations Executive. The 10-year-old whisky was made together with the SOE Anniversary committee.

The Canadian whisky distillery Glen Breton has launched a special commemorative whisky to mark the 80th anniversary of the Special Operations Executive (SOE). The 10-year-old single malt whisky features a unique tartan on its packaging to honour the SOE.

The Special Operations Executive was a secret organization in World War II Britain, established in 1940. The SOE was set up to conduct espionage and reconnaissance in Europe during the war, and later in occupied Southeast Asia. Around 13,000 people were directly employed or controlled by the organization, including Canadian personnel. There is also another Canadian connection in the formation of Camp X, a training location in Oshawa, Ontario. The former site of the camp is now known as Intrepid Park, named after Canadian Sir William Stephenson, a key figure in the establishment of the SOE, whose code name was Intrepid.

The SOE commemorative whisky from Glen Breton features a specially-designed tartan on the box. Named after Sir William Stephenson, the Intrepid tartan features colours chosen to honour the legacy of the SOE. It includes tan for the Canadian Special Operations Forces, green for Canadian Intelligence, black to represent the history of covert operations, red to symbolize Canada and the sacrifice of the SOE, and blue to pay tribute to the sky and sea, which supported SOE operations.

The special whisky has been aged 10 years, produced in Canada to create a single malt whisky at 43% alcohol.

Ruari Nicholson, Chair of the SOE Planning Committee, wrote in a letter about the partnership:
"Glenora Distillery has been a most enthusiastic, innovative and steadfast partner right from the beginning, when planning for events was still in its early stages [...] Glenora went above and beyond in terms of its interest in this special whisky throughout the year, and continues to do so. I cannot adequately express my sincerest appreciation for Glenora’s “can-do” attitude throughout this initiative."

Glen Breton Whisky produces their whisky at the first single malt whisky distillery in North America. The Glenora Distillery has also produced the world's first single malt whisky aged in ice wine barrels. Located in Nova Scotia on Cape Breton Island, the distillery has a strong connection to its Scottish heritage, as well as its Canadian home. In addition to producing traditional single malt whisky at their distillery, Glen Breton also offers accommodation and a pub and dining room. Glen Breton Whisky is available to buy from the Glen Breton website, as well as from suppliers around the world. The special edition SOE anniversary whisky is currently available to purchase online.
