In a recent article with The Edge, Fusionex International vice-president of new technologies Raju Chellam set out the reasons why Malaysia is well-situated to adopt Industry 4.0.

Fusionex International Vice-President of New Technologies Raju Chellam has authored a recent article for The Edge, which lays out the many unique qualities and skill sets which put it in an ideal position to adopt Industry 4.0. The attributes of the country are described as being better placed than many of its Asean neighbours to capture industry markets globally. Briefly, Chellam notes that English language skills, land and competitively priced labour make Malaysia a smart choice. Malaysia also has the proper infrastructure in place.

From his earliest presence in the business world, the Fusionex founder has made every effort to position the company as well as the nation to move in the direction of world markets. Raju Chellam gave his presentation titled 'Gearing up for 4.0' at The Edge Industry 4.0 Forum: Embracing Digitisation in Petaling Jaya recently. His premise was that area require political will and awareness from the community, since the level of technology adoption is generally low.”

Low technological awareness in some countries means that the workforce is not ready for competency in Industry 4.0-related technologies. The opposite side of the coin is that such countries are able to leapfrog into the newer technologies. They bypass big data practices and go to artificial intelligence. Neither Malaysia nor Singapore is doing so, but India's huge population allows for incorporation of AI.

Chellam pointed out that different skills are needed for different industries and Malaysia can take advantage of that. Big data uses brute force computing to go through enormous amounts of data. AI, on the other hand, depends upon a more intuitive style, such as the way the human brain operates. The potential for AI is biggest in the travel industry, followed the retail industry. AI would be able to power the process, which involves logistics and planning, using fuzzy logic and prioritisation. Selecting the right partners for moving forward benefits both parties.
