Preliminary functional hearing tests are now offered by telephone from the National Hearing Test at nationalhearingtest.org. The audiologists at Imaginears are available to help participants who score outside the normal range and need a comprehensive, in-person hearing test.

The National Hearing Test , a functional hearing test administered by phone and created with funding from the National Institute of Health, is a great start in diagnosing hearing loss unilaterally or bilaterally. Even so, it is important for all test takers to understand the limits of phone-based screenings and the merits of a complete in-office hearing test completed by an audiologist. When test participants receive a score outside of the normal range or have questions specific to their situation, they will need the expertise of a local provider. The Medford Audiologists at Imaginears are available to conduct more comprehensive Hearing Testing and furnish personalized guidance to Medford area residents who want local help after taking the National Hearing Test.

The National Hearing Test went live in May 2014 and is being offered free for the remainder of May as part of Better Speech and Hearing Month. Normally, the test will cost $8. The test is best regarded as a screening test for functional hearing – especially the ability to comprehend speech among noise. Each ear is screened independently and receives its own score of Poor, Slightly Below Normal or Normal. Participants are steered toward local audiologists for follow-up after the test. The ‘After the Test' page on the National Hearing Test website says, “If your results from the National Hearing Test were “marginal or below normal,” you should make an appointment for a complete hearing evaluation by a certified hearing professional. Even if your results are in the “normal” range but you still have concerns about your hearing, we encourage you to seek a complete hearing evaluation as well.”

Imaginears is available for comprehensive hearing testing for residents of Medford and adjacent communities. They are pleased to answer the follow-up questions from anybody who participated in the National Hearing Test and to administer a more in-depth hearing assessment. The publicity generated by the debut of the National Hearing Test is bringing much needed attention to the topic of hearing impairment. As participation in the screening test increases, the need for local audiologists to give case-specific treatment plans and advice will also rise. The audiologists at Imaginears in Medford are fully prepared to conduct the comprehensive hearing testing recommended by the test developers and to counsel people on their treatment alternatives if hearing loss is confirmed.

It's worth noting that to get accurate results from the National Hearing Test, a land-line (not cellular) telephone is required. Test takers will also need the manual dexterity and coordination to key in over 50 numbers into the telephone's key pad. Medford residents who suspect a hearing problem and who might have difficulty taking the test by phone should directly schedule an appointment for a complete hearing evaluation at Imaginears.
