Baggins Shoes is celebrating their 50th Anniversary, which commemorates 50, fun-filled, amazing ride years, in business. This is a huge milestone for the Victoria, BC Canada-based business, which has been in the retail space since 1969.

Baggins Shoes got it’s start in 1969 when black-light posters were all the rage and founder Glen Lynch needed a black-light to properly display his. Problem? Black-light vendors only sold to businesses and one could only get a business license if you had a business address (which in those days couldn’t just be out of your home). Glen figured other consumers might also want similar lights, so he found a 2nd floor space, in downtown Victoria, for only $60/month (as long as he swept the stairs) and he was in business..

One of the earliest challenges Baggins Shoes faced was being on the second floor, 15 feet above the foot traffic.

Glen, however, persevered and after 2 years was able find space at street level. 5 years later, he moved the store to the new Market Square on lower Johnson.

Baggins Shoes’ Founder, Glen Lynch says “We’re delighted to be celebrating our 50 Year Anniversary. I believe the secret to getting this far in business today is to make sure you offer what consumers want not what you want to give. Let me give an example. In the late 1980’s, one of our clothing line reps took on the very small line Converse had available at the time. Soon Converse became all the rage due to nostalgia over the brand and this brand of shoes was outselling everything else we were doing. So we dropped all lines and focused on having the largest selection of the brand in the city.”

Tara Savrtka, Co-Owner at Baggins Shoes was also quoted when discussing one of the store’s smart moves. “One of the high points of Baggins Shoes’ history was adding an online component to our physical store along with the addition of two complementary brands of shoes – Vans and Dr. Martens.”

Baggins Shoes currently consists of 15-20 employees and has big plans for the upcoming year. One of their core objectives is in providing a fun and adventurist atmosphere for customers and employees alike.

Baggins Shoes would also like to thank friends, customers and all its partners for their well wishes on this happy occasion.
