François Castelmore has written a special post on wines for Passover, and has recommended Herzog Wineries’ collection of kosher wines, made in the traditional Jewish wine-making tradition.

The Passover Seder celebration is the most important date in Jewish calendar, and features a meal that is steeped in religious and symbolic meaning, recalling their history in one of their most meaningful traditions. The meal features specific ingredients that are used to help tell the story of the chosen people, and one of those is wine. Four glasses of wine are consumed over the course of the ceremony, including an offering to Elijah. This leaves Jews looking for the perfect kosher wines to enjoy with the feast, and sommelier François Castelmore has recommended four of Herzog Wineries’ best.

François has been a self-proclaimed fan of Herzog wines on their own merits, proclaiming them the best of the Ventura county wineries. Now however their own unique heritage has paid particular dividends when it comes to the Passover feast, with their kosher wines selection being tailor-made for Jewish festivals.

The sommelier recommends the Baron Herzog, Chenin Blanc, Clarksburg, 2012 – collected overnight when chilled and kept cool throughout fermentation for the perfect crispness and clarity, the Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles 2012 which features blackberry and plum notes and a vanilla spice finish, a lush and fruity Special Reserve Chardonnay, Russian River Valley, 2011 and a ripe, rich and lush Special Reserve, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, 2011.

François Castelmore elaborated upon his endorsement, “Finding great kosher wines can be a challenge especially when the festivals are upon us, Jews end up paying over the odds to enjoy something more than average wine. Herzog however provide an ideal solution- their winery was built buy the Jewish Baron Herzog and has continued his traditions, producing kosher wines of the highest quality and at surprisingly affordable prices, ranged between thirteen and forty dollars, and all overseen by master wine maker Joe Hurliman. They provide superb accompaniments to the traditions of Passover, and with four glasses of wine being drunk at the ceremony, families can try all of these and give a super offering to Elijah that will have his spirit flying in the door.”
