Oklahoma Sooner Quarterback Turned Republican Leader Inspires Listeners with Motivational Words on Finding Inner Strength

Scottsdale, AZ – The Creating Wealth show host Jason Hartman welcomed former Congressman J.C. Watts (R-OK) to discuss the ups and downs of a career in politics and public service. The basis of the discussion came from Watts’ new book DIG DEEP: 7 Truths to Finding the Strength Within.

Rep. Watts was the first African American elected to statewide office in Oklahoma, where he played college football for the Oklahoma Sooners and led them to two Orange Bowl victories as quarterback. After college, Watts played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) before switching careers to enter into politics. He represented the Fourth Congressional District of Oklahoma from 1994-2003.

Despite serving in Congress for only four terms, Watts acted as chairman of the Republican Conference for George W. Bush. Unlike most modern politicians, Watts left Congress early because he felt like he performed his duties to the fullest and wanted to move on to more meaningful and impactful initiatives.

“I was careful I didn’t become addicted to approval,” Watts said. “In football, the fans don’t always like it when you’re gaining three or four yards a play. They want the 60-yard pass, which is much harder. In politics, I didn’t want to cheer the crowd and make decisions that weren’t right.”

Watts believes everyone should be enterprising for themselves and others through investment and value creation. In addition to his long resume in business and politics, he owns John Deere stores, gives speeches, and is active in the cattle business. He wants everyone to take a more proactive approach to building wealth.

“I don’t want to create higher taxes,” Watts said. “I want to create more taxpayers.”

Watts delivered the Republican response to Bill Clinton's 1997 State of the Union address. He proceeded to start and is now chairman of J. C. Watts Companies and the Watts Consulting Group – the largest African American-owned lobbying companies in Washington.

Currently, Watts is President & CEO of Feed the Children, a large and successful global non-profit that feeds kids in need and eradicates poverty. He is also the co-founder and co-chair of the Coalition for AIDS Relief in Africa.
