Flashlights Among Most Needed Items After Hurricane Irma

With more than 600,000 homes and businesses still without power after Hurricane Irma, flashlights are high on the list of requested items by those starting cleanup and recovery.

As Florida digs out from the damage caused by Hurricane Irma, one of the most persistent obstacles is the persistence of power outages. As of Sept. 14 at 9 a.m., more than half a million homes and businesses remain without electrical power. While Florida Power and Light says they are on track to restore service by Sunday evening, the power company notes that homes and businesses that sustained major damage may still be in the dark if the workers judge that it would be dangerous to restore electricity. Considering the circumstances, it’s no wonder that high quality flashlights are high on the list of items requested by aid organizations working in the area.

In the lead up to the storm, most media outlets put flashlights and extra batteries at the top of the list of hurricane preparedness supplies, with the Miami Herald noting that flashlights are safer than other alternatives, such as candles and lanterns, in case of power outages during a hurricane. Both flashlights and batteries were among the first items to disappear from store shelves as residents prepared for the coming storm.

A spokesperson for MJH Innovations, which distributes My Pocket Lite Beam, noted several things to consider when choosing flashlights to include in aid packages to the hurricane-ravaged state.

“When choosing flashlights for aid packages,” the spokesman said, “it’s important to consider several features that will make them more useful to people working and living in buildings without power. A good utility flashlight will be lightweight, have a powerful, adjustable beam, and a very efficient energy rating for battery use.”

The company notes that My Pocket Lite Beam uses easily available AAA batteries, and that the low power usage guarantees long battery life. In addition, the small flashlight ships with a metal belt clip, a lanyard wrist strap and a bike mount that can be used to affix the light in one place to provide a steady source of illumination. Those three small features take on larger importance when working in flooded areas and disaster zones, where dropping a flashlight can mean losing it permanently.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who were affected by this catastrophic storm,” the spokesman added. “We understand that flashlights are not a panacea, but for those returning to darkened homes and businesses, they can literally be life-saving. We hope these few tips help people choose the best flashlights to include in aid packages heading for Florida and the outlying islands.”
