Last year, a lot of information came out about the importance of using reusable shopping bags, and one expert is worried that the message may have been lost in all the recent news events.
“For a time, people clearly understood why they needed to carry reusable shopping bags whenever they stepped out of the house to make purchases, says a spokesman from MJH Innovations, an online retailers that sells earth friendly products at affordable prices, including fruit shaped reusable shopping bags. “But with all the recent news, we’ve become worried that people have forgotten just how important this really is.”
He’s talking about the problem with all the plastic pollution that the planet is currently experiencing. For instance, just off the coast, there is an island of plastic floating that is the size of the state of Texas. What’s even more frightening is that it takes about 12 million barrels of oil just to produce the number of plastic bags that Americans use every year, resulting in about $500,000,000 a year in costs. And of all those bags, less than 4 percent of them are recycled because the costs are so high that most recycling plants won’t accept them.
“Some people assume that it’s better to ask for paper bags when checking out at the grocery store, but that comes with its own set of problems,” he says. “For example, every year 14 million trees are cut down in order to supply the 10 billion paper bags that people use. And producing paper bags drastically affects the environment as 70 more air pollution is generated when producing these bags.”
He stresses that the solution is easy. “Reusable shopping bags, like the fruit shaped one we sell, are the answer. People only have to buy them once and then can use them for years. If everyone in the US used reusable shopping bags instead of paper or plastic, our environment would be in much better shape.
