In an interview where Petrovich shared his 35 years experience in his field, he cited the biggest problem people have is they avoid estate planning due to equating it with death.

To help ease this anxiety and overcome misconceptions surrounding estate planning, Petrovich points to three crucial factors that help create a personalized roadmap for each client:

1. Discovery Questionnaire

The first aspect Petrovich sees as an essential building block of an estate plan is what he calls a ‘discovery questionnaire’, which he refers to as a “homework assignment.”

When asked to elaborate, Petrovich said, “When people first come to me, a lot of my clients do not clearly understand whether or not they have an estate. This process provides a clear cut answer.”

2. Estate Planning Language

Another important part of prepping for an estate plan, Petrovich says, is getting people acquainted with the relevant terminology.

When asked how he does this he said, “we provide clients with something called our “Estate Planning 101” language guide.
“Sharing the language of estate planning allows us to help clients understand the terminology they will see throughout the planning process such as ‘executor’ and ‘trustee.’”

3. Execute Roadmap & Follow Up

By understanding the concepts and terminology behind their estate plan, Petrovich says, “people are more equipped to provide input on the draft roadmap prepared by Petrovich to meet their needs.”

Normally at this point Petrovich creates a final draft of the estate plan, which can then be executed by the client.
That being said, Petrovich takes it one step further to ensure his clients continue to receive the best legal advice possible.

“The important thing to remember is that this plan is not cast in concrete – it’s a changeable document.”

“So, we supply our clients with what could be described as an instruction manual that provides information on life-triggering events that may necessitate them reviewing their plans,” he said.

On top of this Petrovich also recommends clients are kept up to date with regulatory changes.

“If there’s a major change to the law – such as the new estate tax code – we will contact our clients as opposed to them contacting us to advise them on what they need to adjust in their plan.”
