In September, 2017, Equifax announced that 147 million people’s data had been exposed online. When leaks like this occur, data can be sold on the dark web and shared all over the world instantly.
The breach resulted in hackers stealing a huge amount of personal data, from credit card details through to driver’s license information, social security numbers, and more. Other information included personal addresses and birthdays, all of which was stored on Equifax’s servers at the time of the hack.
