When asked to comment Hogue said, “Paying for elderly care – nursing home care costs - can deplete resources quickly and drastically reduce your quality of life. Medicaid can help lift this burden off your shoulders by covering most or all of these costs,” he said.
However, Hogue says that the majority of the population has a couple of misconceptions about qualifying for and receiving Medicaid benefits.
For example, many of his clients often think that they have too many assets to qualify for Medicaid in the first place.
“What many of my clients don’t realize is that they can protect their assets and qualify for Medicaid at the same time. It’s possible to qualify for Medicaid benefits – but only if you plan for it. Contacting an experienced elder law attorney will help you do this,” he said.
Hogue added that another misconception is that people who are denied Medicaid after applying are not eligible for coverage if they re-apply.
When asked to elaborate, Hogue said, “A lot of people assume that being rejected for Medicaid is like being denied a bank loan, meaning that they can’t apply again. However, this is false. There are a number of reasons why a Medicaid application might not be approved, and an experienced elder law attorney can use various strategies, which are legal, to get it approved. Hogue added that the most common reasons an application is rejected include too many assets, incorrect or missing paperwork or information, or spouse-related issues.
