Durham, NC jazz education & preservation foundation The Durham Jazz Renaissance Foundation (DJRF) announced it is now accepting applications for two scholarships through its website. The jazz and education scholarships will benefit members of the community with an interest in jazz, education, or the arts.

Durham, NC jazz education & preservation foundation The Durham Jazz Renaissance Foundation (DJRF) announced the acceptance of applications for the 2019/2020 Joe Mitchell/Mozella McLaughlin jazz and education scholarships. Applications for the scholarship are to be made through the Foundation’s new website. The scholarship will be awarded in October 2019 in honor of the birth month of American jazz pianist and composer, Thelonious Monk.

The twin $1,000 scholarships are open to individuals aged 16 through 30 who demonstrate a sustained track record of interest in jazz, education, or art. Applicants are also required to showcase how they plan to use the scholarship grant to strengthen the communities they represent.

The DJRF scholarships have been instituted to support gifted and deserving individuals in the pursuit of excellence in fostering an environment that pays homage to the rich history and tradition of jazz and other arts. The Foundation hosts several jazz events and concerts, local music festivals, movie & dinner events, and art shows featuring the work of local artists.

The DJRF holds several longstanding partnerships with businesses, venues, institutions, and individuals including The Imperial Centre, the Harlem Brewing Company, the Millennium Hotel Durham, Hendrick’s Chevrolet Southpoint, NC Central University, and NC Folk Life.

DJRF preferred jazz ensembles include the Peter L. Joyner Quintet, the Kevin Golden Trio, and the Mac McLaughlin Group. The Foundation works alongside its sister venues including the Ubuntu, an historic and jazz performance space, the Lambert House, an artist residence and the DJRF administrative center, and Afrikiko’s, a grassroots, home-based art boutique.

According to a spokesperson for The Durham Jazz Renaissance Foundation, “DJRF’s mission is to enlighten the human spirit and empower our community and the human condition. To this end, we are pleased to announce that applications for the 2019/2020 Joe Mitchell/Mozella McLaughlin jazz and education scholarships are now open through our website.”

The Foundation welcomes contributions to its community fundraisers, and donations may be made through its new website.

The DJRF is a nonprofit arts and community organization founded by Durham, NC jazz musician and impresario William McLaughlin. The Foundation’s board members include Beverly McLaughlin, Treasa Wright, Mawuena Agbeblewu, Charles Robinson, Wayne R. Williams, Muna Sauti Mujahid, Andre Nabors and Lionel Parker.
