Esquire Magazine has recently issued a call for all of the men across the nation wearing free T-shirts splattered with company logos: take them off! Many of these T-shirts are given away for free, or worn by startup founders, and they are showing up all over the American landscape as they are worn by men who think they look better than they do, according to the popular magazine. The article, based on a Tumblr piece called Dudes in Startup Shirts, has pictures of dozens of men wearing the free t-shirts in all types of situations. For instance, some are shown eating pizza, at tech conferences, and one man is shown wearing a startup t-shirt as he is being led away in handcuffs.
“The problem is,” according to a spokesman at Michael and David men’s shirts, a Los Angeles based fashion design house, “The American style of men’s fashion is changing, and the men portrayed in these photos are simply not keeping up with the times.”
And he’s right. The recent changes to men’s fashion styles are in line with the styles worn in Europe. Instead of the traditional sloppy and extreme casual styles that have dominated American men’s fashion culture for years, stylish American men are now choosing fitted shirts with contrasting collars and cuffs. These shirts are more sophisticated, and allow a man to look good in any occasion, even when he wants to be casual. Today’s men are also opting for fabrics that are rich, while at the same time comfortable. Some fashion critics have called the styles a tribute to the skinny 60s when men wore clothes that fit their bodies, rather than enveloped them as seen in recent years.
While it’s true that every man needs free t-shirts, however goofy, the fashion magazine makes a valid suggestion: wear them in the privacy of your own home. And after reviewing the pictures and comments from Esquire Magazine and the tumbler site, it might be wise to follow their advice and only wear the shirts while cleaning out gutters, painting houses or, while working out at the gym. And when out in public or trying to make a good impression, men are encouraged to keep up with today’s style by wearing shirts that will feel comfortable and be looking much better.
