Letterpress has a long and rich history and was used for all commercial printing for hundreds of years. From the days of Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th Century through until the 1970’s letterpress was the only method. In the 1970’s offset printing replaced Letterpress in most print shops as a quicker and more consistent process.
The letterpress process is lengthy and slow as it consists of several stages: composition, imposition and lock-up, and printing. Letterpress is printed one colour at a time and each colour needs a separate printing plate and set up on the press. Each colour is also mixed by hand. For this reason most letterpress jobs are usually one or two colour designs.
Despite the longer process it is favoured for precise delicate artwork and type, and is often used for wedding invitations.
