Rob White, owner of the Blind Pig Tavern in downtown Athens is urging people who enjoy reading crime fiction thrillers to meet author Les Cochran. See Author’s Website

“We’ll have a guy here who’s a real mafioso. I love reading books about the mafia and it just so happens that Cochran’s second book in his historical fiction series about the Detroit Mafia is titled ‘Blind Pig.’” This is a first for Athens, GA – a Blind Pig author at the Blind Pig Tavern.

“Lots of my customers ask ‘what’s a blind pig?’ There are two answers and anyone who comes to the Blind Pig – Mafia Crime Thriller event will know both answers before they leave.” White said. See Blind Pig Tavern.See Blind Pig Tavern

Cochran, a former university president, has become a fiction writer in his retirement. He started his teaching career in inner-city Detroit and was there when the riots began after the police raided a Blind Pig. Almost everyone in Michigan, especially Detroit, knows about Blind Pigs, but many not familiar with Detroit aren’t sure.

Cochran’s experiences living in Detroit during the riots and watching one of the largest, and fastest growing cities in the country crumble, led him to focus on researching the history of the city and the role the mafia played in taking control. He worked closely with Oscar Westerfield, a Supervisory Special Agent (retired) of the Detroit Division of the FBI, to provide real crime scenes never released before.

In today’s world, authors must find ways to market their own books. As Cochran and his wife Lin (his marketing agent) were researching strategies for marketing Blind Pig, they discovered that there are many restaurants using the Blind Pig name. In fact, Cochran found more than 25 in the eastern part of the country

The principal characters, a Detroit Detective, police department colleagues, Mafioso’s and FBI agents interplay with concerned citizens willing to put their lives on the line in pursuit of the greater good. It is difficult to sort fact from fiction in this well-crafted storyline that takes a deeper look at the mafia grip of Detroit during this difficult period.

Cochran will greet customers at the Blind Pig Tavern, 312 E Washington Street, Athens, on Thursday, November 8 from 4-7 pm and again on Friday, November 9, 11 am to 2 pm. Activities will include mafia talk, book signing, contests and prizes. He’s also planning a Blind Pig photo/video shoot with Blind Pig customers.

“We’re looking forward to meeting people in Athens, especially those who are interested in historical fiction, learning more about the mafia, or reading a good crime fiction thriller,” Cochran said. “It’s great that the Blind Pig Tavern will be hosting a Blind Pig book event.”
