CouponMate Helps Parents Score Savings for Back-to-School Season

Shoppers can save time, money and stress during the busy shopping season by letting CouponMate scout out the best deals on over 200,000 retailers.

Tech startup MarketKarma launched CouponMate in the spring of 2015. The coupon app lets shoppers browse and buy normally via thousands of domains and online retailers while making the most of coupon codes and deals. Shoppers heading into the busy back-to-school shopping season can use CouponMate to save on clothing, accessories and supplies for kids of all ages.

The app is an extension that works with Safari, Firefox or Chrome browsers and acts within the shopping cart on U.S. retail sites. Shoppers place items in their online shopping carts, but at the checkout screen, they have the option to click a "Find Best Coupon" button on a browser toolbar. CouponMate scours the web, analyzing available coupon codes against the items in the consumer's cart. The best coupon codes are applied at the time of purchase to save shoppers maximum dollars.

While CouponMate can be used by any shopper at any time, parents and others searching for school supplies are likely to appreciate a streamlined way to save money. Families already deal with the hassle of finding specific supplies from a list or outfitting picky teens and tweens with appropriate clothing; CouponMate takes the work of saving money out of the process. Shoppers don't have to search for coupon codes themselves, and CouponMate puts codes through a validation process so shoppers don't end up with a code that doesn't work.

Currently, CouponMate only works within three browser environments, but MarketKarma plans to release a version for Internet Explorer by the end of 2015. The company is also developing mobile app versions of CouponMate for use on iOS and Android devices.

The extension works with most US retail sites as of summer 2015. MarketKarma states that it is planning to add additional support within the European Union, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada.

MarketKarma has designed CouponMate to help shoppers save money while supporting their favorite charities. The extension currently has more than 5,000 users. The charitable nature of the product will kick in at about 50,000 users, says MarketKarma. Once there are enough users to support the donation process, MarketKarma will donate 51 percent of the proceeds from app use to charities chosen by shoppers.

CouponMate generates revenue through commissions. MarketKarma receives commissions on sales each time a user makes a purchase using a coupon code found through the extension. Once the app has enough use, MarketKarma will donate part of the commissions from each user's activity to a charity that the user designates. The savings and charitable act are completed within about 60 seconds of shopping time, says MarketKarma. Manually testing dozens of coupon codes could take 5 minutes or more.

To use CouponMate, shoppers have to download the program and install it. The app is an add-on extension for the browser, which means users access functionality through their browser window. CouponMate adds a bar within the browser that lets users manage their couponing experience. When shopping on a site where CouponMate is available, users will see an indicator on their browser bar. They can then choose to operate CouponMate from the browser bar during checkout.

Shoppers might combine CouponMate with back-to-school deals on a variety of sites to save big during the upcoming shopping season. While many retailers only allow one coupon code per order, shoppers can combine the best codes with free shipping deals, product discounts, or BOGO offers to prepare for school while saving some money to cover the fees and other expenses that come with the first few weeks of education.
