Corpus Christi Health Insurance Could Face Problems With Pre-existing Conditions

28 September, 2020

Corpus Christi health insurance and the people who have it now have to worry if COVID-19 will be considered a pre-existing condition moving forward. If it is, insurance companies all over the world would be able to deny coverage to millions of Americans who currently have it or have had it in the past. As a result, many lawmakers are speaking out against such a dangerous prospect and hope to have legislation in place should the high court strike down ACA in November.

According to an article in the Washington Post, the recent death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg increases the odds that the court will strike down the Affordable Care Act when it hears the high-profile lawsuit on Nov. 10. Currently, ACA guarantees millions of Americans, including those with health insurance in Corpus Christi can buy coverage and receive a comprehensive set of benefits in any plan they choose. Included in this is a ban on insurers who may try to deny coverage or charge more to people with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or cancer. COVID-19 could theoretically be included in that discussion on pre-existing conditions, which is why so many government officials are up in arms about the potential discrimination that could ensue if ACA is struck down.

Rick Thornton, a Corpus Christi health insurance agent says Americans should take these fears seriously. He also pointed out, as did the article in the Post, that before the ACA, the flu was largely considered a pre-existing condition, too. The coronavirus has killed 200,000 people in the United States over the last eight months, per the Post, keeping it on track to become the nation’s third leading cause of death this year. Time will tell exactly what will happen with the court’s ruling.
