Contemporary Looks Command 2014 Residential Kitchen Design Styles

Less is definitely more when it comes to modern, minimalist kitchen designs in 2014. According to Style At Home, among the hottest trends are the use of natural materials, black hardware and non-traditional lighting.

It seems tradition is out, and contemporary looks are in — at least when it comes to the latest home design trends. The home decor giant Ikea revealed record profits in 2013, as more and more people opt for sleek, modern design styles instead of older decor. In fact, minimalist styles are becoming increasingly popular, as consumers furnish their kitchens without any of the clutter or fuss.

The 2014 Kitchen of the Year — as featured in House Beautiful magazine and designed by Stephen Miller for the San Francisco Decorator Showcase — is a prime example of this modern, minimalist theme. For example, the slim profile of the kitchen countertop design is neat and tidy, with plenty of ample space on either side to store cutlery, crockery, and other belongings. Like many recent kitchen trends, this kitchen makes best use of natural light – which floods into the room and illuminates the interior space. The dramatic black cupboards and units lie in bold contrast to organic white which has been used for the one of the kitchen countertops.

White and black gloss kitchens are also becoming popular among homeowners. These styles couldn’t be any more different to the traditional country-style hardwood kitchens of the past, and introduce a modern — almost futuristic — look to any kitchen.

“They’re easy to clean, white and black gloss instantly catches the eye when you walk into the room, and can be combined with pockets of color (decorative items, plants, kitchen appliances) to create bold contrasts.” says Nancy Sall of NC Sall Custom Countertops

According to Style At Home, among 2014’s hottest trends are the use of natural materials, black hardware and non-traditional lighting. It seems consumers are becoming more experimental with their kitchen designs, and are wanting to have a fully functional and practical kitchen without compromising on style. Slab backlashes are definitely in, according to Erin Feasby from Feasby & Bleek’s Design. These can instantly become a focal point in the room and become a conversation starter when guests come to visit the property. Less is definitely more when it comes to modern, minimalist kitchen designs in 2014. Once getting pride of place on kitchen countertops, appliances like toasters and kettles are now being stored in cupboards and units until they need to be used. This helps to free up more space on countertops and creates a clean, sleek look throughout the room. This clutter-free ideology has also extended to other rooms in the home.
