This is the second book Coates has authored. The book was written with the aim in mind to help families make the holidays magical by creating lasting memories and traditions. There’s also particular excitement about this launch because it gives families a fun activity to do together, or around which to build a party.

The Snapdragon Party is Marcie and her family getting ready for their annual Snapdragon Party. Just hours before the party, Marcie has to go to the emergency room, putting the family’s plans at risk. Readers will likely find particular interest in the custom from Great Britain featured in the story that encourages goal setting and treating every day as sacred. The book’s cover art was created by the author with beautiful artwork she purchased. The Snapdragon Party is being released by PRP Press.

Katie Coates has a background as a military child. This helped shaped the creation of the book, because moving every year as a military family made traditions even more important.

When asked about why she wrote the book, Coates said: “I want to inspire families to spend quality time together making wishes that turn into goals, and creating memories by keeping meaningful family traditions.”

Coates has hopes that the book will inspire parents and grandparents to create memories as they read the book to their children, and encourage families and friends to adopt the Snapdragon as their own tradition to make magic during the holidays. This positive outlook from the author is certainly testament to her optimism considering some of the mishaps during its creation. At one point a last-minute decision to self-publish the book led to a very steep learning curve for the author and threatened its creation.

In a recent interview, the author made a point of thanking Lynn Lucas and Cynthia Allison for their part in the creation of the book, saying: “They remembered our Snapdragon parties from our teen years, and wanted to know how to go about bringing the magic and meaning of the Snapdragon into their own lives. When they pressed me for details at one of our annual grown-up “slumber parties”, I felt compelled to write about the Snapdragon. The Snapdragon Party is a direct result of their interest and our shared memories.”
