In September Census data was released that revealed 54% of children who live in Cleveland Ohio are living in poverty. This is the second highest rate of any national big city.
What is more disturbing is that growing up in poverty means these children will face uncertain futures. More widely discussed is issues surrounding safe housing, nutritious food and affordable daycare for parents.
However, there is another part to childhood poverty that takes a major toll on the child’s life. When children grow up in households struggling to get by, they endure daily stress that can have a huge impact on their mental and physical health. This is according to experts.
The stress comes out as mental problems like eating disorders, anxiety or learning disabilities. While they may physically experience issues like asthma, diabetes, malnutrition, and many more. Ultimately this affects the economy because of an increase in healthcare costs when they become even sicker adults.
Not to mention the likelihood of these children ending up in jail or homeless. There are several studies out there that estimate a cost of roughly 500 billion dollars (4% of the nation’s GDP) a year.
Cleveland has the stats to back this up. Kids here are extremely poor. The city was one of 50 large US cities that saw an increase in child poverty between 2000 and 2013. The overall national child poverty rate has actual decreased.
“Media can be so focused on highlighting poverty everyone else in the world,” said Candice Lane a local Cleveland resident. “We have so much poverty in our backyard.” This is very true. The city’s poverty rate is second to Detroit (59%), yet bigger cities like San Francisco and Seattle have less than 20% child poverty rate.
Access to loans despite bad credit helps parents find a better financial situation, but only for a period of time. These loans will eventually need to be paid back and often at a higher interest than the banks or other financial institutions.

Children are helpless but the suffering in America’s own backyard should be addressed. Sickness and mental challenges will result in these kids never having a chance at a better life. Opportunity is what’s needed.
