The purpose of this long-lasting highlighted worldwide thematic promotion activity is to publicize Chengdu’s representative attractions, such as giant pandas, Tianfu Greenway, and new trends of tourism industry, enable international guests to experience Chengdu’s charm “at the entrance of Chengdu”, and attract more foreign tourists to Chengdu.

In the past, Chengdu was only a “transfer station” for inbound tourists. Through several years’ rapid development, by now it has become a tourist destination. Chengdu is also making efforts to become a world famous tourist city.

As from January 1, 2019, the 144-hour transit visa exemption policy for foreigners will become effective in Chengdu. Foreigners from 53 countries/regions, including Italy, Russia, Finland, etc., holding valid international travel
documents and connected passenger tickets, with a specific date within 144 hours and seat number, for heading for a third country (region) can enter China without visa from an airport in Chengdu and stay in Chengdu for 144 hours. By now 110 international air routes to Paris, New York, Los Angles, St. Petersburg, and some other cities have been available in Chengdu and they cover five continents on the earth.

As a national famous historic and cultural city built 3,000 years ago, Chengdu has made much progress in terms of the efforts made to become a world famous tourist city. It ranks first among cities in China in terms of city size and development quality. It also keeps ahead of cities in western China absolutely. Various data and indices indicate that Chengdu’s tourism has gone into a stably-growing period from a quantitatively-growing period. It is developing on a high-quality basis. In the future, Chengdu’s tourism will play an important role in global tourism industry.
