Orlando, FL - The whooshing sound of Baseball Pitching Machines and the pinging sound of bats nailing baseballs into the bleachers are in the air right now. And the Sunshine State became a little brighter this week for a few good reasons.The MLB spring training schedule is now on display as the Rays and the Marlins gear up for the highly anticipated upcoming season. The sweet smell of brick-dust begins to fill the air in Jupiter and Port Charlotte while Central Florida is also capturing the headlines with the construction of its brand new sports training facility in Tavares.
Former baseball star Chet Lemon played an instrumental role in helping the Detroit Tigers win the World Series in 1984, and today he’s been given the green light to run The Big House, a multifaceted sports venue designed to help hone the skills of Florida’s youth. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Lemon and his wife Gigi have been staples of the community by staying involved in the state’s AAU program and also running Sunshine Athletics, a youth sports program designed to bring out the best in the spirit of competition.
Perennial baseball store owner Steve Klein had a few things to say about the 162,000 square-foot, $6 million dollar project. Klein is chiefly noted for supplying baseball pitching machines and batting cages to training facilities across the country. When asked about the timely nature of the grand opening, Klein said:
“I love this time of year because it makes me feel like a kid again. The Big House will be no small feat! I’ll bet Chet Lemon and his family are thrilled to be part of this momentous occasion. Things like this are an inspiration to us all: kids, parents, athletes and retailers alike. I’ll definitely be there for the grand opening ceremony, but for now I’m doing my homework and retooling for the upcoming season.”
A great deal of time and effort goes into connecting the puzzle pieces to make these types of projects successful. Klein sees himself as a cog in the wheel of progress.
“With the new lines of baseball pitching machines for sale and new light weight batting cages on the way to my store, the inventory needs to match the growing demand.”
The Big House may be in need of Klein’s professional services. The venue is set to open with 9 basketball courts, 14 outdoor beach volleyball courts, an indoor running track, a baseball infield and a dozen batting cages as well. Aside from the sports hardware involved, the arena also intends to provide a variety of amenities to complete the experience, including a health and wellness center, day care accommodations, classrooms and a list of other one-stop-shopping attractions.
Tavares City Administrator John Drury is happy about the number of potential jobs to be created for local construction industries as well as the hiring of full and part-time employees to keep The Big House operation running smoothly.
It also appears that Steve Klein will be a busy man in the months ahead as he explains, “Between getting ready for the country’s favorite pastime, Fantasy Baseball and taking care of my end of the business, I hope to be furnishing a variety of baseball pitching machines for sale at The Big House in the near and distant future. I may have to burn the midnight oil, but it’s all for a good cause.”
