Cemetery Theft Escalation Causes Demand For Solution

Increasing cemetery thefts of precious metal products creates demand for alternatives.

Cemetery theft is escalating across America. Recently from Madison, WI to Clover, SC to Portland, OR reports of bronze cemetery flower vases being stolen in the months of November and December are continuing to roll in. Many of the cemetery vases that have been stolen may not be discovered for several months. Cemetery management agencies from all over the country are reporting that many families of loved ones whose graves have been desecrated are becoming tired of the continuous cemetery theft and are demanding an alternative to cemetery flower vases manufactured from precious metals. Even in areas where there is oversight of scrap metal purchases, the stolen property is still slipping through.

The cemetery vases which retail for as much as $500 or more are being sold for scrap metals, sometimes yielding as little as just a couple of dollars for each vase. Some cemeteries are reporting losses in the hundreds to even thousands of cemetery vases in a course of a single weekend. Demands for increased security are being responded to with several solutions but there are limits to what a cemetery can do. Some cemeteries are increasing security measures, adding cameras or security staff. However the thieves are often capable of circumventing the additional security measures. Families are demanding an alternative that will deter the continuing theft of cremation urns, burial urns and cemetery vases.

In addition to the reported cemetery theft cases, a number of cemeteries have theft that will not be noticed or reported, potentially for months after the theft has occurred. Winter is the season that the memorial vases are used the least. The theft will be much more evident in the spring as families gather to remember loved ones with fresh flowers. In winter it is common for the vases to be turned down, which means the body of the vase is housed underground in a canister designed to protect it when not in use. Instead of seeing the vase as it is when it is standing up, it is not easily visible when turned down. It is often not until the family comes to use the vase that it is realized as missing.

The pain that is felt when a family realizes that a grave site has been desecrated is not easily solved. The families are often left responsible for the replacement cost. Replacing the bronze vases often leads to additional theft, unknowingly rewarding the often unpunished robbers encouraging this behavior to happen again. Many cemeteries are preparing for this unpleasant realization by having a replacement vase product available made of an alternative material. Not only is it much more affordable, it is a theft deterrent to replace a stolen bronze cemetery vase with a vase of no scrap value. Some cemeteries are even offering them complementary as a service to their patrons.
