Humans are threatening wildlife worldwide through their actions, but much can be done to reverse this disturbing trend.Experienced mariner Captain Jako Hall says it's the responsibility of everyone to play their part in saving the wilderness and the wildlife that lives in it. This is especially true in South Africa, one of the most diverse countries in the entire world.
As the southernmost country in Africa, South Africa hugs the Indian Ocean and South Atlantic Ocean coastlines. The interior is a mixture of mountains and flat land with large areas sparsely populated. The diverse landscape gives range to a wide range of weather, with areas ranging from the arid desert-like conditions to tropical rainforests.
Still, South Africa has incredible biodiversity. Among the 17 countries in the world that are classified as "megadiverse," South Africa ranks sixth.
The country is home to a massive variety of animals, including some endangered species, and more than 20,000 varieties of plants, or roughly 10% of the known species on Earth.
This extreme biodiversity makes it all the more important that humans do whatever they can to help protect and preserve South African wildlife.
Many organizations are chipping in to play their part. One such organization is the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Reserve, which was founded to help protect the rhinos in South Africa. Poachers are the biggest threat to rhinos in Africa, and the organization is trying to combat that with the nature reserve.
The American Wildlife Foundation also does its part. It took over the day-to-day management in 2003 of the Mthethomusha Game Reserve to counteract and protect against poaching in the wildlife.
But, poaching isn't the only concern for protecting and preserving South African wildlife, Jako Hall says. It's also essential to protect the habitats they live in.
Many of the species of animals that live in South Africa are specialized. Their habitat is isolated, and they can only live in one particular region of the entire world. This means that a disaster of any significance could have a devastating impact on their future.
Humans must do whatever they can to protect the wilderness these animals live in. This includes not destroying the habitat for goods and protecting against dangerous wildfires.
Many animal species are helpless against the dangers that humans bring to them. And while a lot of damage has already been done, it's not irreversible. Doing something positive today can have long-lasting consequences for animals tomorrow.
