Canceled Proms All Over the US are Going Virtual

In-person proms and graduations may be off the table this year, but that doesn’t mean US teens aren’t finding a way to continue with their plans anyway – no, not by leaving the house, but by meeting up online.

Current social distancing and stay-in-place orders mean it isn’t possible to host or attend social gatherings. Instead of missing out on prom altogether, teens are recreating their proms at home. Prom is a rite of passage for graduating high school seniors and is something many start planning for months and even years in advance.

Many friendship groups start deciding on their chosen styles, how they’ll color-coordinate – or not – and how they plan to get there, in Junior year. Understandably, they’re crushed. Sophia Kianni, a senior student at Thomas Jefferson High School told Time, “all my friends are extremely crushed.”

Not all students have given up hope, though. Zack Monterosso and Colin Wire, seniors at LACES, started testing Zoom to see if they could host the prom almost “as normal”, for 100 students or perhaps even the whole class. They believe these virtual get-togethers will give seniors a chance to say goodbye.

In Louisiana, the Baton Rouge Youth Coalition held their prom on April 16. Allison Williams, an actress known for her role in Get Out, served as a guest DJ for 100 attendees. The theme was “Royaltee,” so teens could wear a glitzy prom outfit if they chose to, or simply a plain tee.

Allison isn’t the only star to get involved, John Krasinski hosted a live prom on April 17 on YouTube, where he was joined by the Jonas Brothers, Chance the Rapper, and Billie Eilish.

In Ohio, another senior student, Jessica Ludovici, plans to have a huge group FaceTime. “I’ll put music on, and we’ll go in the expensive dresses and tuxes [we wanted] for prom,” she told Time. “I tweeted and was just like, ‘this is what’s going to happen. It’s going to be in my living room, you guys can send me a song for the playlist and that will be your ticket.”

Jessica said she and her friends wanted a way to experience and show off the dresses they wanted to wear. If you’re feeling like a part of your high school experience has been taken away from you, here are few things you can do to host your own virtual prom:

1) Choose your dress or tux. What you wear is a hugely memorable part of your prom, so dress up if you can. Many of your friends will already have their outfits ready to go, and this will give them a chance to wear them. If you’ve yet to buy a dress, and still want to wear one, Sherri Hill dresses have a gorgeous selection of prom dresses that are ideal for this prom or and any event in the future. While Sherri Hill does carry traditional princess-style prom dresses, they have a lot of other options that would work better for an at-home prom and other events in the future. Perhaps the best thing to come out of your canceled prom is that you can wear your Sherri Hill outfit again at a future prom or event!

2) Pick your platform. Do you want to use Zoom? Google Hangouts, FaceTime, or something else? Do a bit of research and choose which is best depending on the number of people you want to invite.

3) Curate a playlist. This might be a couple of hours’ worth of songs you and your friends love to sing and dance to together, or you might want to keep it chilled with some background music while you and your friends catch up.

4) Decorate. Put up a string of fairy lights, blow up a couple of balloons, and before you know it, you’re already in the prom spirit! This will be the perfect time to get in all your classic prom photos - you might want to enlist the help of someone at home, or if you’re feeling creative, you can even recreate the famous TikTok glambot video! Who’s to say your prom can’t still be awesome?
