With the explosion of people working from home in 2020 due to COVID-19, the number of people wanting to organize, transform or optimize their garages has exploded as well. Jon Matzner, owner of the San Diego-based Garage Excell said “2020 was the busiest year for Garage Excell in our 13 year history. As more people are working from home, they want to utilize all of their available space. We have people turning their garage into a gym and need the floors done, all the way to cabinets and storage so they can use their garage as an office or new recreation area.”
According to the Wall Street Journal, “Only 11% of homeowners are happy with their garages” and according to the Thompson Company, “52% of homeowners want their garages to be envied by their neighbors.” Armed with that information Garage Excell began investing in updating their designers’ tools to state of the art 3D design software to allow our customers the ability to envision their new garage and customize it to fit their personal needs before any construction has even begun.
As property values have increased in San Diego and Southern California, more people are looking to upgrade their existing property rather than sell and purchase a new home. In a recent study, Impulse Research stated that “80% of buyers consider the garage to be a factor when purchasing a home.”
When asked about this, Jon agreed, saying: “When people are looking at their renovation plans they are thinking about how to squeeze the most out of their current space. A garage upgrade is perfect for this as it is often overlooked as available space. A simple bank of garage cabinets or slat walls added to your garage can multiply your storage capacity while new epoxy flooring can increase the usability of the garage and give homeowners the space they didn’t know they had.”
