The Moray Walking & Outdoor Festival takes place again, this year from Friday 15 June to Sunday 24 June, 2018. Demand for quality accommodation is expected to be high – one luxury hotel is ready to greet tired walkers and adventurers looking for comfort combined with award-winning fine dining.

About the Moray Walking & Outdoor Festival

Started in 2011, the Moray Walking & Outdoor Festival has now grown to be one of the UK’s leading outdoor activity and walking festivals. Each year it entices people to come to the north-east of Scotland and explore the scenic Moray Highlands, spanning the foothills of the Cairngorms up northwards to Moray’s sandy coastline.

This year the 10-day Festival offers over 58 organised events – ranging from the ‘easy’ (e.g. exploring Lossiemouth’s Heroes, Heroes and Hops), to the ‘challenging’ (e.g. the Isla Marathon Walk) to the heritage- focussed (e.g. an evening about Scottish woman Nan Shepherd). Did you know that Nan Shepherd, Scottish hill walker, writer, and poet, is featured on the Royal Bank of Scotland’s £5 note?

Visitors can set the pace and choose different events every day or dip in as part of a more extended break in the area. Whether visitors are seeking indoor, family-friendly, multi-activity or nature events, the Festival features an array of enjoyable activities including walking, cycling, white water rafting, hill skills training, health walks, wildlife events, story walks, heritage events, bushcraft and more.

Festival-goers will need to hurry because the most popular events are becoming booked already.

Walking in surrounding areas

Once walkers have explored the Moray area, they can choose to take in walks in the neighbouring Cairngorms. This ancient area set in the Cairngorms National Park offers walking trails, short and long, on the most extensive range of mountains in the whole of the UK.

There are various walks along the Speyside Way, one of Scotland’s best-loved trails. The Speyside Way runs from the Moray Firth coastline southwards to the edge of the Cairngorm Mountains. Grantown-on-Spey is one of the natural stopping places on this popular route and has shops for walkers to stock up on provisions and equipment.

Top accommodation on popular walking route welcomes Festival walkers

After a busy day’s walking and activities, adventurers can relax at one of the top-rated hotels in the region. Culdearn House Hotel is an ideal base from which to explore the area and re-charge overnight. This popular option is in Grantown-on-Spey where walkers often stop off and re-charge overnight.

The boutique hotel offers luxury for those choosing not to camp but also provides practical comforts such as drying facilities for boots and clothing. The family-run hotel can also make packed lunches even sometimes offer transport to walking starting points. Another useful service on offer is local luggage transfer between one accommodation and another.

Festival-goers looking for tips and advance will also find that the owners have lots of local knowledge and maps of the area. Culdearn House owners William and Sonia Marshall said: The Moray walking festival at the height of the summer is one of the highlights of the local calendar. We love hearing about our guests’ adventures and giving them tips about the most enjoyable walks.”
