BROOMFIELD, CO–Denver area real estate agent, Alice Kepchar, weighs in on the possibility of Amazon’s HQ2 second headquarters being built in Denver and how it could affect an already strained housing market.

Denver, Colorado is currently among the top twenty finalist cities for the Amazon HQ2 second headquarters. This is an exciting possibility for the finalist cities but also causes concern as housing markets in those cities are now in flux.

The Colorado market, specifically, has already been strained for many years due to a lack of inventory and an increase in buyers looking to move to the state. Denver, especially, has been seeing a steady rise in median home prices as the number of homes for sale continues to remain stagnant.

Most experts agree that if Amazon chooses Denver for the HQ2 second headquarters location, the strain already being experienced will worsen until the market becomes genuinely unaffordable for most people. Part of the lack of inventory is being blamed on the fact that homeowners who would usually be thinking of selling their homes are now waiting to see if Amazon comes in the hopes of being able to sell for more. This was seen when Google announced a campus in Boulder, Colorado when home prices skyrocketed before Google even came simply because they were coming.

Alice Kepchar, a Denver area Realtor® based in Broomfield, Colorado, offers her thoughts on the possibility of Amazon coming to Denver saying, “There is a cause for concern when faced with the possibility of Amazon bringing their HQ2 second headquarters to our area. While it would raise local home values, inventory is currently so low and competition among buyers so fierce that soon it may be too much for your average buyer. Our local market is already under so much stress, and I believe it could worsen if Denver is chosen for the new headquarters.”
