During breast cancer month in October, Chef Gorji will donate 15% of the proceeds of all bottles of wine purchased at the chef's restaurant Canary By Gorji to Laidley's Ladies Foundation. Founded by Dr. Alison Laidley, a Dallas breast surgeon, the non-profit is dedicated to helping under-funded families receive excellent breast cancer care. Unlike high-profile fundraising organizations that support general research and awareness, Laidley's foundation strives to make an impact in our own community.
Gorji, a long time supporter of the breast cancer battle, has in past years sponsored culinary themed events during breast cancer month that have included cooking classes, monthly prix fixe menus and gourmet gift baskets, with a percentage of the proceeds going to Dr. Laidley's foundation. This year he decided to make Canary By Gorji's wines available. See the wine list here. Known for his interesting wine list, he thinks it will have a big appeal to his guests that want to join the fight.
“Breast cancer has touched my life so many times over the years. I have watched my family, friends and customers battling this devastating diagnosis. Working to fight breast cancer has a very personal meaning to me. I realized that I could fight from my own battlefield—the kitchen,” says the chef.
These culinary events have allowed Gorji as a small business owner to be charitable on a much larger scale than he had been able to do previously. “It was impossible for me to support a charity on this level before or have the feeling that I was making a difference.” He said anyone who purchases a bottle of wine will now know, not only do they get a wonderful wine with their meal, they will also be helping a great cause.
