Survivors of traumatic and acquired brain injury, their caregivers, neuropsychologists and holistic practitioners looking for the latest information on the treatment and prevention of concussions and also the prevention of depression and suicidal thoughts that may come with post-concussive syndrome can register to attend Brain Injury Canada’s First Semi Annual Conference, “Brain Injury Matters: Research, Innovation and Inspiration” in Halifax-Dartmouth, scheduled April 14 – 15, 2015.

Dr. Joanny Liu, Chief Optimism Creator, Doctor of Classical Chinese Sports Medicine and Sports Psychology is speaking today at the conference and will cover key issues such as:

The effects of chronic stress in concussion – What damage chronic stress does to the brain and how it delays the recovery from a concussion.

How to deal with the effects of chronic stress – Guide conference attendees through a technique to deal with a very common type of stress that leads to self-confidence and optimism

How to become whole without the fear of repeat concussions – Show attendees the steps required to prevent more concussions.

When asked about the reasons behind presenting at this event, Dr. Joanny Liu said:

“Today’s presentations are suitable for those people with post concussive syndrome (PCS) who still have terrible headaches, who are holding off their lives because of PCS, who have quit or lost their jobs due to it, who are depressed and who are having any thoughts at all about suicide. I’m going to teach attendees about the detrimental effects of chronic stress on the brain and then I’ll get them to go through one of my neuropsychological exercises to both address and release a common type of stress from their lives. Because the brain is an emotional organ, we need to deal with the things that make us feel helpless, that make us suffer needlessly. Of course there are real issues that need to be addressed but let’s take a systematic approach instead of just wishing they would go away. The only way out is to solve our problems and at the same time, this retrains the brain. So my techniques are about training the brain. This resets the emotional state and the thought patterns. It’s important to use the whole brain, to take all of its parts into consideration. The science of brain plasticity (neuroplasticity) shows us what happens in the brain. Let’s use that information in innovative ways, not with more machinery or more drugs, but with human connection and empathy to help someone recover quickly either from a concussion or from post concussion syndrome. The ultimate goals are to prevent these common traumatic brain injuries by changing how we think and feel and to prevent depression which, if not treated could later result in suicidal thoughts. The person finally finds a way to take back control of their lives.”
