Bestselling Author Launches Book Trilogy to Fight 'Perfectionist' Anxiety During COVID-19

As the world emerges from the pandemic, the devastating impact on mental health is clear. Leadership coach, mentor, poet, and bestselling author, Elizabeth Onyeabor, announces the launch of her book trilogy with the aim to gently guide perfectionism sufferers toward self-love.

It's well known that COVID-19 has had an adverse effect on the mental well-being of many people. What is not well known is the role perfectionism plays.

In a 3-year study conducted by the state of Alaska, 56 per cent of decedents who completed suicide were described as perfectionists. And according to researchers Hewitt and Heisel, “Perfectionism can increase the likelihood of suicidal behaviors leading to death by suicide."

Leading international expert on perfectionism, Onyeabor, explains, “In my 25 years of experience training, mentoring, and coaching leaders around the world, I have seen the devastating effect perfectionism has on executives and managers. Add to that the extra pressure of the pandemic, and those in leadership roles are at higher risk for perfectionism-related anxiety, depression, and suicide.

An additional, exacerbating factor is ‘mom guilt’ – women leaders and executives who were already struggling to maintain the balance between work and home life, and who are now struggling even more due to homeschooling.

In 2016, to address the growing concerns about levels of depression in leaders, Onyeabor launched her bestselling, award-winning book, ‘From the Shadows: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Renewal.’

She also founded the Habitual Happiness Hub, an organization that helps perfectionists let go of the pressure for perfection, celebrate powerful progress, and enjoy a lasting sense of accomplishment.

“Every day, more and more successful but self-critical people are discovering through the Habitual Happiness Hub how to stress less and achieve more by letting go of the pressure for perfection. But with the pandemic setting many people back, I had to do more.”

Onyeabor will release the second and third books to complete the trilogy this July.

“My first book, ‘From the Shadows’ allows the reader to draw on my experiences, contemplate their own experiences, and gain profound insights in the process. The second book, ‘Escaping the Shadows: A Pilgrimage with Poetry’ allows readers to gain healing and comfort from past trauma through wordplay and rhythm.

The final book, ‘The Light Within: Freedom Through Forgiveness,’ addresses mom guilt and striving to be the perfect mother, creating a sacred space for the reader to heal and forgive themselves and others.

Through her honest portrayal of her traumatic situations and her triumph, Onyeabor aims to give new insights to those who suffer from perfectionism, especially when juggling the demands of leadership roles along with parenthood, and practical steps towards healing, forgiveness, and self-love.
