One of Africa's premier 5-star resorts, Swahili Beach Resort partners with Ohio rotomolding company, Granger Plastics to install Sandsaver beach erosion barriers to combat beach erosion and re-nourish beach.

Beach erosion is the long term loss of sand, sediment and rocks along the coastline in an area due to the action and energy of waves, currents, tides, wind driven water and other impacts from storms. The landward retreat of the shoreline is often measured and described over a scale of tides, seasons or other short term cyclic processes. Beach erosion is often caused by hydraulic action, abrasion impact or corrosion by wind, water and other forces both natural and unnatural. Being that beaches are the largest single attraction for many all over the world seeking vacation destinations, it is well known and documented the economic impact that beaches have on tourism, economies and jobs as tourism is one of the leading contributors to the world’s combined Gross Domestic Product. In 2018, tourism was the second largest growing contributor to the world’s combined Gross Domestic Product, adding $8.8 trillion, up from $8.3 trillion, as well as adding 319 million new tourism related jobs across the globe, according to Forbes in March of 2019.

Diani Beach in Kenya is a major beach resort area, just south of Mombasa. Diani Beach is often highly regarded as one of the most beautiful stretch of beaches in all of Africa. Diani Beach has won numerous awards including being voted Africa’s leading beach destination for the sixth consecutive time from the World Travel Awards. These beautiful beaches offer incredible views of sunrises and sunsets, a seemingly endless stretch of white sands and fine dining with breath taking views and unmatched ambience.

While being regarded as one of the World’s most beautiful beaches, Diani Beach, like all other beaches around the globe has been subjected to tremendous amounts of beach erosion over the years. Some parts of Diani have recently been exposed to beach dredging, only to find that this operation contributes to erosion, while carbon dioxide emissions and dangerous hopper dredges potentially threaten the local ecosystem and wildlife. This has led to resorts looking for more environmentally friendly and more permanent solutions in solving their beach erosion issues.

Swahili Beach Resort, Diani Beach’s premier luxury 5 star resort offers an all-encompassing experience of Diani Beach with luxurious rooms, state of the art technology and sophistication unseen on the Kenyan coast. Swahili Beach Resort also offers full service assistance for guests looking to become immersed in local activities such as scuba diving, kite surfing, sky diving, safaris or renting a dhow and taking a sail around the beautiful coastal waters. Many guests rave about the 9 tier luxurious pool, which is one of the largest pools in all of Africa, while providing incredible views of the resort and the Indian Ocean. Swahili Beach Resort, a previous winner of multiple World Travel Awards including Kenya’s leading beach resort, has recently begun a project of re-nourishing its award winning beachfront with a rotationally molded product from the United States, Sandsaver.

Sandsaver, an extremely durable, rotomolded beach erosion barrier has garnered international interest for years from all over the globe. Sandsaver’s multiple successful installations have proven it to be a viable alternative to previously accepted methods such as dredging, groins, jettys and coastal armoring that have shown little to no long term effectiveness. While dredging continues to be the most commonly accepted alternative, many beach erosion experts have been vocal in criticizing its extremely temporary results, escalating costs and potential harm to the local wildlife and plants. In all of Sandsavers previous installations, Sandsaver had positive effects on sand accretion on both adjacent ends of the installations, showing unambiguously positive results as exclaimed by independent third party engineering firms. Because of these favorable findings, several global coastal communities and resorts such as Swahili Beach have taken an interest in utilizing Sandsaver as a natural solution to beach erosion.

The Sandsaver modules were installed in the evening of January 12, 2020. Immediately after the first tide there was noticeable sand accumulation within the system. After 4 days or 7 tides it has been estimated that over 1500 cubic yards of sand has accumulated within and around the system. While the results will vary from one install to another, all based on the amount of sand is being carried by the surf, the height or force of the surf and the degree of slope pertaining to the profile of the beach. This particular installation has provided almost immediate satisfaction to all parties concerned. Even the local and national environmental officials have expressed their satisfaction and are anxious to see the long term results, stating “If this continues to prove itself, we will want Sandsaver to line the entire coast of Africa”. Of course only time will tell, but the results being displayed in such a short period of time has given hope to a solution that has plagued the coastlines of the entire planet.
