Australian Cycling Store Cashes in on COVID Cycling Boom

Bike sales have risen in Australia due to rising interest in cycling. During the coronavirus pandemic, government investment in cycling infrastructure has grown and sales of bikes have increased too.

Many countries have experienced an increased interest in cycling. Australia has joined the global cycling boom in the last year, with people seeking to enjoy the outdoors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bike shops have seen an increase in sales in the last year, as Australians have joined other countries in a higher interest in cycling. During the coronavirus pandemic, bicycles have become key for many who wish to travel but still maintain social distancing. Commuters who want to avoid the crowds on public transport such as buses and trains are instead turning to cycling. This allows them to get to and from work in a safer manner, while also providing exercise during a time when gyms and other establishments are closed for business.

In the UK, 20,000 bikes awaiting manufacture and delivery in May 2020 had already been sold or reserved. Australia soon followed this pattern too, with restrictions easing and people starting to get back to work around the same time. In late April last year, there were several hundred more bike riders on off-road paths in Australia. A spokesperson for Bicycle Network compared the increase in sales to panic buying, saying that many bike shops had been cleared out in the early months of the pandemic. Shops were selling thousands of bikes in just a month as more people felt encouraged to get outdoors.

However, these changes are more than just short-term, with government organisations investing in cycling infrastructure. Also in May 2020, the New South Wales Government announced a plan for a COVID-safe transport network, including working with councils to create more pop-up cycleways and enhancing pedestrian access. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore announced six new cycle links, while the City of Melbourne committed to putting in at least 10km of pop-up bike lanes around the CBD.

In Western Australia, Zak Kirkup and the WA Liberals have committed to an $81.3 million comprehensive plan supporting the growth of cycling across the state. WA is the top state for cycling per capita, with 400,000 West Australians getting on their bike each week. Between April and June 2020, an extra 77,000 West Australians were riding bikes compared to the same period in the previous year.

Le Tour Cycles is one of the cycling retailers that has seen an increase in sales over the last year. Offering a wide range of cycling products, they have been keeping residents of Victoria and beyond supplied with all of their required bikes and accessories so they can continue pedalling.
