Monthly global internet traffic has increased tenfold over the course of the last decade, according to figures published by router maker Cisco Systems. The same source projects that content delivery networks (CDNs) will handle nearly three-quarters of all internet packets by 2022, a sharp increase from the 2017 total of 56 percent.Catering to that level of demand will require expanding and finding new and better ways to serve content consumers in particularly fast-growing regions. Not every CDN company is yet well-positioned to meet the challenges of the near future, but some are aggressively and successfully gearing up to take global content delivery to the next level.
IDC recently identified CenturyLink Corporation Japan, for instance, as an established leader in the field, with Akamai being the only other CDN company to merit that distinction. That places CenturyLink above major names like Amazon, Cloudflare, and Verizon when it comes to delivering web, streaming video, gaming, and other data.
Content creators and others increasingly opt to use CDNs because doing so removes barriers that would otherwise stand between them and consumers. Each leading CDN replicates sought-after data at sites around the world, putting it physically closer to people everywhere who wish to access it. That improves responsiveness and reliability of data delivery, making for higher-quality experiences, overall.
The CenturyLink CDN has become an increasingly popular alternative to that of longtime leader Akamai for a number of important reasons. In the company's recent "Worldwide Commercial CDN 2019 Vendor Assessment," for instance, IDC analysts put a particular emphasis on the "Asia/Pacific region due to huge pent-up desire for video streaming and online gaming."
CenturyLink's strong ties to that area allow it to provide higher levels of locale-specific support than would be expected from U.S.-based Akamai. From better aligned working hours to linguistic issues, CDN users interesting in serving the booming Asia-Pacific region increasingly find that CenturyLink suits their needs the best.
That commitment to service carries over to the company's operations in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. With major CDN users also seeing the value in dividing their business up across two or more vendors, CenturyLink's CDN technology, security, service, and performance are making it a clear choice for more and more of the world's leading media companies.
Already a longtime staple of the internet, the CDN will only become even more central as global traffic levels continue to grow. Akamai's historical dominance was once such that its name was virtually synonymous with "CDN" in some quarters.
That is all starting to change, though, as the internet becomes a more truly global phenomenon. With companies like CenturyLink being particularly well poised to respond to the growth that is sure to come, the CDN market is becoming far more dynamic and varied than in the past. Already the winner of many prestigious awards from highly respected sources like Forrester, Gartner, IDC, CenturyLink is a name to watch.
Looking beyond the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa have vast amounts of potential for internet traffic growth of their own. How well the world's CDN providers cater to future demand from these sources will inevitably reshape the market for many years to come.
