Announcing 5 Tips for Adoptive Parents Bringing Home a New Baby

Important guidance for adoptive parents in making the transition with a new baby.

Many adults who are considering adoption wonder what it will be like when they bring the new baby. It's going to be much the same as birth parents who are bringing home a new baby. Parents can follow these tips to prepare for parenthood:

Gather supplies in advance of the birth. At a minimum, have a crib with proper bedding, clothing, diapers, baby wipes, and feeding supplies. Some parents opt to have other items like a changing table, monitors and a bassinet. Also get a proper infant seat to bring the baby home from the hospital in; The hospital will not allow parents to leave without a certified car seat.

Plan for time off work. When new parents adopt a child, they can take time off under the Family and Medical Leave Act if they qualify. This provides new parents up to 12 weeks off, but the time is unpaid so parents should plan ahead for finances during this time.

Prepare for new emotions. Adopting a new baby is going to be emotional. Depending on the terms of the adoption, parents might spend time with the birth family while the baby is in the hospital. This can add another layer of emotion to the situation.

Take time to get to know the baby. Parents may be ready to show the new baby off to friends and family members, but remember that newborns have a weak immune system. It might be best to remain at home as much as possible while a bond is developed with the baby.

Accept help. Newborns sleep a lot, but that sleep is in short spurts. This interrupts the sleep cycle, so being sleep-deprived will be the new norm for a while. Accept offers for help from loved ones. Maybe a friend or relative has offered to help with the baby so you can take a shower. Let them, and enjoy some alone time.
