While a long-lasting boom for trailer production has helped many trailer companies soar, major trailer companies that sell aluminum trailers are starting to feel the pinch due to unprecedented demand for materials. Basic items like tires and suspension are becoming difficult to acquire relative to the huge demand for parts, according to a recent report by FleetOwner. Order volumes are still high for producers across the US, so the limited availability of materials has led to challenges like delays or even increased costs. Though reports like FleetOwners’ have been limited to America so far, Canadian consumers may begin feeling the effects as well.

Canadian consumers should be wary that the supply-demand issues seen in America could have a cascading effect on trailer sales up north as well. Locally-owned trailer dealerships have the potential to be hit the hardest, but Canadian dealerships do not appear to be seeing any effects just yet. BC Cargo Trailers, a trailer dealership in British Columbia, reports that the company is having no issues keeping up with demand through the first quarter of 2018. As a spokesperson for the company commented, “BC Cargo Trailers had a great start to the year so far, and the company anticipates that good sales will continue. There has not been any difficulty acquiring parts as of yet, but BC Cargo Trailers will ensure that any relevant information regarding parts shortages that may affect consumers will be passed on as quickly as possible.”

While the aging of many company trailers has contributed to the demand for new trailers, the primary reason replacement parts are required is due to the wear and tear aluminum trailers are put through. It remains to be seen whether the supply issues affecting America will cross over to Canadian dealerships, however, at this moment in time it appears unlikely due to the strength of the Canadian market.
