Africa's First Cohort of Blockchain Academy Graduates Completes Intensive Blockchain Training

Addis Ababa - As demand soars for Blockchain developers across all major industries from technology to banking, from healthcare to government and everything in between, Gebeya, Africa’s premier software engineering and IT training academy, and its partner, Stellar.org, a Silicon Valley nonprofit that supports an open-source blockchain network, have completed their first intensive training session. The cohort of 11 former and recent Gebeya graduates now possesses the skills necessary to shape Africa’s movement into Blockchain technology.

Amadou Daffe, CEO and Gebeya co-founder, stated that "Through Gebeya's Blockchain Academy, we aim to produce the next-generation of African Blockchain engineers. Our goal is to become an African market reference for Blockchain expertise.”

Gebeya’s objective for the Blockchain training sessions was twofold: the 6-day, 40-hour intensive training sessions from February 26 to March 5, 2019, focused on equipping professionals and extensively experienced software engineers with a thorough understanding of the Blockchain technology while preparing them for future training sessions so that they can lead and expand the community by training up to 1,000 Blockchain engineers in Africa.

Blockchain applications are numerous and widespread. Tumelo Ramaphosa, the youngest son of South African president, Cyril Ramaphosa, founded StudEx Wildlife, a startup that places animals on the Blockchain, thereby digitizing them for breeding, trading, or selling, allowing investors to share in the value.

Involved in Blockchain technologies since 2010, Tumelo explains the business model in layman terms: “In many ways, StudEx is trying to create and decentralize this monopoly that happens in South Africa. You have farms where farmers have their animals, with StudEx we’d be able to raise more funds through initial coin offers on the animals.”

Tumelo Ramaphosa will be speaking once again at this year’s Unlocking Blockchain Africa in December 2019.

African fintech firm, Raise, has recognized the domestic opportunity. Marvin Coleby, the company's CEO, and co-founder states: “Blockchain and distributed ledger technologies carry the potential to create economic and social independence for billions of Africans both on the continent and in the diaspora. In order to achieve this, one of the most important things the Blockchain ecosystem needs at the moment are engineers who are African to build those systems. That’s where Gebeya comes in, they’re one of the only formalized institutions on the continent offering courses for Blockchain engineers and are adding a workforce of engineers to the ecosystem for companies to hire, work with and partner with. We’re lucky to be partners with a company building such a foundational aspect of Africa’s digital future."

Through Blockchain, Raise’s technology allows anyone to tokenize real-world assets and trade them as legally enforceable security tokens on the Stellar.org platform. What is the firm's aim? To enable frictionless asset ownership management for investors, broker-dealers, companies and law firms. Learn more at https://getraise.io

Co-founder of Gebeya, Hiruy Amanuel echoes the importance of training domestic talent within Africa. “If there are trained professionals that are good at what they do and they don’t have opportunities in their country, then, of course, they’re going to move to the U.S. or Europe.”

Having achieved its lofty goals, Gebeya and Stellar.org’s first cohort now possesses the skills required to work on projects related to Blockchain as well as train the growing number of students interested in this high-demand technology and profession, which has experienced growth upwards of 517% with salaries ranging from $127,000 to $172,000.
