Advanced Vision Care offers Keratoconus treatment to halt the progression of the disease, make wearing contact lenses more comfortable and correct the visual impairment.

Keratoconus is a progressive degenerative disease. It usually presents in people between the ages of 10 to 25 and often starts in one eye before spreading to the other. The disease causes the cornea to thin and become misshapen taking a conical shape and, while the exact cause is unknown, it does seem to be inherited. Keratoconus affects one in every 2000 people, and the severity varies between individuals.

Advanced Vision Care can is one of the few clinics in the UK that can offer real hope to patients suffering from Keratoconus. They offer total visual rehabilitation through treatments to halt the progression of the disease, make wearing contact lenses more comfortable and correct the visual impairment caused by the disease.

Patients are invited for comprehensive testing and a consultation with AVC’s leading surgeon, Dr Pillai. Dr Pillai is a highly respected corneal specialist and will design a personal treatment plan for each patient based on their goals. He will stay with the patient throughout their journey, providing reassurance and explaining each step clearly before proceeding.

One option is collagen cross-linking. This treatment halts the progress of Keratoconus and partially reverses the corneal steepening caused by the disease. This technique strengthens the chemical bonds in the cornea, which increases the thickness and stabilises the cornea, effectively halting the disease. This method is only required once but to work, the Keratoconus must not be too advanced, and the patient must be over the age of 18.

Another option for patients who have undergone collagen cross-linking or whose Keratoconus has stabilised naturally is a corneal implant. Corneal implants, such as INTACS and Kerarings, are primarily used to improve the shape of an irregular cornea. This treatment significantly improves patient’s eyesight, but they may still require glasses or contact lenses, which are much more comfortable after treatment. Corneal implants can be completely reversed and are exchangeable if needed.

Advanced Vision Care also offers Kerasoft lenses, which are made specifically for each patient and tailored to their exacting needs. These lenses allow for higher oxygen transmission through the lens, reducing dryness and allowing patients to wear these lenses comfortably for longer. It vastly improves the quality of life for patients who have struggled to find lenses that work for them.

Advanced Vision Care offers first-class treatments and services to all their patients, and they understand how eye conditions such as Keratoconus can impact the quality of life. First-class surgeons perform all their treatments, and Dr Pilai has over 25 years of experience as an ophthalmic surgeon.
