Square Cottage has conducted a survey to determine if people prefer medium roast or dark roast coffee

There are many different brands, roasts, and flavors when walking down a coffee section of a grocery store. While many people have a “go to” brand that they’ll just pick off the aisle shelf or drop into their shopping cart on Amazon, what if you want to try something different? Putting the brand names aside, one key factor that will determine the coffee's flavor is the type of roast. Generally, the roast will be either a light, medium, or dark roast coffee. Square Cottage ran a survey to see if people preferred the taste of a medium roast or a dark roast coffee.

A light roast isn’t as common as the other roasts so Square Cottage decided to focus on the roasts that were more prevalent. A medium roast coffee usually has a balance between acidity and body. Medium roasts tend to bring out a balanced coffee with lots of possible hints of flavor. Dark roasts tend to lose more subtle flavors of the original coffee bean and give a greater emphasis to body.

Square Cottage organized the survey where participants tasted a variety of different coffees but were not told the brand name or the type of roast. After each tasting, participants were asked a standard series of questions.

83% of participants preferred a medium roast over the dark roast. Square Cottage revealed that they only used coarsely ground arabica beans and each taste test was made using the Square Cottage french press coffee maker. A coarse grind is typically recommended when using a french press.

At the conclusion of the taste test, participants were also given an opportunity to try cold brew coffee that was made using the french press. The Square Cottage french press that was used in this survey was also designed to be a high-quality cold brew coffee maker.

Cold brew has become very popular and has a unique taste. Bruce Stevenson, the co-founder of Square Cottage stated that “the french press was designed to be an all in one coffee maker. Many other coffee makers are either too small for cold brew, don’t extract flavor very well, or are made of plastic. Our french press cold brew maker is made from glass, extracts optimal flavor, and comes in the perfect size to make hot coffee, iced coffee, or cold brew.”

The Square Cottage coffee maker comes in a large 1.5L / 51 oz size and can be used to make cold brew, iced coffee, and regular hot coffee. Most standard size french presses don’t have the capacity to make cold brew and can only make a few cups of regular coffee. The Square Cottage cold brew coffee maker has become a best seller and customers love the ability to make a cold brew and conventional hot coffee with the same french press.
