A recent article in the Washington Post stated that the lack of laws requiring testing of water in U.S. schools – along with the preponderance of lead pipes in aging buildings – is leaving many children and teachers at risk. Now there is one fewer state in which that will be the case.According to a recent article on the website of WTKR-TV, the CBS affiliate in Norfolk, Va., schools in the state of Virginia will be required to test their potable water for lead as of July 1. Although low levels of lead do not affect the body immediately, prolonged exposure can damage the nervous system and cause other problems, including learning disabilities and hearing impairment.
