4Patriots Answers the Question: How Long Can Food Sit Out in the Sun?

A fun outdoor party can turn into a bad memory if food sits out too long, especially on sunny days. 4Patriots LLC of Nashville, Tenn., offers some precautionary advice to keep people safe.

This is the time of year that many people are enjoying picnics, backyard barbeques, beach excursions and outdoor parties. Food is almost always part of the equation.

As distributors of a wide variety of survival food kits, officials at 4Patriots LLC of Nashville, Tenn., have an opinion on how long it’s safe to keep food outside, especially on sunny days when perishable food can spoil more quickly than most people think.

In worse case scenarios, bad bacteria including E. coli and salmonella can develop from food being left out in the sun too long.

“Enjoying food is a big part of outdoor fun during the summer, but taking a few precautions with food that’s exposed to the elements will allow people to look back on the day favorably,” said Allen Baler, Partner at 4Patriots. Baler’s company provides a variety of products that help people become more self-reliant and independent.

One standard regulation to follow is the two-hour rule. No food that is normally refrigerated should stay out of the fridge for more than two hours before being eaten. And on days when the temperatures reach 90 or higher and food is outside, it’s safer to change that to one hour.

The best way to avoid food spoilage is to quickly put food back in a cooler after people have had a chance to fill up their plates.

And if raw meat is being grilled, keep it in the cooler until it gets tossed on the grill. Also, keep any cutting boards and plates that have touched that raw meat away from other foods, then wash them promptly.

With fruit, it’s better not to cut any of it open until right before it’s going to be consumed. Same thing with vegetables. Salad dressings need to be kept cool as well.

One thing that should never need to be thrown out before it’s cooked is survival food.
Good-tasting and nutritious Food4Patriots meals are offered in five different survival food kits – 72-hour, one-week, one-month, three-month and one-year. This variety is provided due to the differences in family sizes and incomes.
