Biometrics is using finger or palm print or face recognition to identify an individual. It offers several advantages over identification cards, passwords or PIN codes, namely the requirement that the person being identified is physically present and the elimination of the need to remember security codes or tokens.
Apple’s use of biometric Touch ID finger print scanner authentication on its devices is a strong indication of the expected expansion of this technology to include other commercial devices and appliances requiring fingerprint identification for access.
My Kyle Gray said, “Biometrics is an effective way to prove the true identity of the individual user with a greater level of assurance given it is almost impossible to fake.” He went on to say, “The level of security can also be enhanced when coupled with a personal question or pin code being requested.”
Biometric data has to be digitally recorded and securely stored. One concern with this new technology is if the servers storing biometric information are breached (hacked). If a person’s biometric information is stolen, this could have extremely serious consequences for that individual. Therefore, the security around this data is critical and must be of the highest standard, have continuous monitoring in place to ensure the highest level of security.
