For the first time since 2006, there were no reported bicycle fatalities in New Mexico between January and April 2013 according to the UNM Traffic Research Unit. This comes as positive news to the Szantho Law Firm, which represents people injured in bicycle accidents. The firm cautions, however, that as more cyclists take to the roads for the summer months drivers will need to remain vigilant in order to minimize collisions.“It is encouraging to see such a dramatic reduction over last year’s numbers,” says Andras Szantho, founder of The Szantho Law Firm. “More than half the year’s bicycle fatalities had already occurred by this time in 2012. The hope is that awareness campaigns such as ‘Share the Road’ are having an impact and that more drivers are watching for cyclists.”
The Szantho Law Firm encourages cyclists to do their part to improve their visibility so that drivers can spot them clearly. Bright, reflective clothing and flags are a great way to stand out against the background. State mandated equipment like bells, and headlights for nighttime riding, should also be functioning properly and unobstructed.
The firm also urges drivers to be attentive to the increased presence of bicycles on the road. They advise that drivers always signal turns so that cyclists have time to react before a car is turning into their path. They also caution drivers to never underestimate a bicycle’s speed, as bikes can easily achieve speeds of fifteen to twenty miles per hour. Finally they remind drivers to watch for approaching bicycles when opening doors from street side parking
