Montague, NJ, USA – July 17th, 2014 /PressCable/ — As Bed Bugs become more prevalent in Society the question arises what can people do to stop their spread? Unfortunately the answer is simple but not well received.

Bed Bugs are about 3/8 of an inch long at adulthood but they start out about the size of a head of a pin. They cannot fly or jump using people and their belongings as the primary method of transportation. They can also move about thirty feet in about 6 minutes and can slip through the tiniest of cracks and crevices. They spread quite easily as demonstrated bu the numbers of newly reported infestations yearly.

Pesticides are becoming less and less effective as Bed Bugs develop resistance to these chemicals through adaptive changes in their exoskeleton as well as the chemicals within their bodies that help them overcome the effects of the poisons that are used to combat them. So what is the solution? Education.

Back in the 1940′s and 1950′s and as reflected today the buildings that have the least amount of issues are those that have management, staff, tenants and shareholders educated on the identification of these bugs, the signs that indicate an infestation and clear cut guideleines on what steps have to be taken for eradication. Early identification of an issue results in a faster response before the population is able to take hold and makes it less likely for the infestation to spread to adjacent units. This reduces the cost for treatment and potential for further spread to others.

Today due to the continued belief that having bed bugs makes them “dirty” or “unclean” many are still hesitant to report suspected issues and try to eradicate them by their own means. Unfortunately many don't have the knowledge or experience to exterminate them successfully and instead spread them to their neighbors or further move them about in their homes. In addition due to “resistance” almost all of the over-the-counter products are ineffective. Many Management companies are hesitant to broach the subject with their clients and would rather deal with the issues as they arise-offering no clear cut guidelines to a populace that is less informed than they are about bed bugs.

Education is the key. If issues are identified early, people are provided with guidelines and work together, bed bugs are eliminated quickly and usually with much lower costs. Until the time that the Real Estate Industry as a whole agrees that there must be a consensus on training and education for both clients and staff, problems will continue to spread and fester. The only ones that benefit from this ongoing lack of education is the pest control industry.
