The Canadian Institute of Scalp and Hair Specialists comments on a study showing over half of men suffering from hair loss would shorten their lifespan for a re-growth of hair.

The Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists (www.CanadianHair.ca), a Toronto-based organization offering hair loss treatment for over 25 years, is addressing a recent study that showed over half of balding men would trade their life expectancy for hair.

The study found that 54% of balding men in the United Arab Emirates would trade a year of their life or more for a full head of hair, with 5% willing to shave off a full decade of living for some re-growth.

“Hair loss can be a traumatic experience for a lot of men,” says Ken Robson, founder of the Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists. “It’s troubling when men are willing to shorten their lifespan for hair, but it’s not entirely surprising either. Hair is often tied to physical appearance and youth, so losing hair can be a devastating event for many men.”

The study also reported that 56% of balding respondents said their hair loss contributed to social and psychological issues.

“A lot of men see a large negative impact on their lifestyle due to hair loss,” says Robson. “While there’s often nothing unhealthy about hair loss, the psychological effects and lost confidence can begin to impact their relationships.”

Over a third of the men also said they suffered from depression or anxiety disorders stemming from their hair loss.

“When hair loss is affecting mental health to this degree, it is an indication that people need to start taking this issue much more seriously,” notes Robson. “By taking preventative steps, men can avoid the confidence and mental health issues that come with hair loss.”

For men seeing the first signs of hair loss, there are a wide variety of treatments available. “Supplements and topical treatments can often be effective when hair loss is minimal,” says Robson. “At that point, you are trying to stop the progression or even promote re-growth of the hair. There are a lot of options when it is caught early.”

For men suffering from more severe hair loss, Robson says there is no reason for them to suffer indefinitely. “Hair restoration surgery has advanced a lot over the years and can now achieve completely natural-looking results. Men with severe balding have permanently corrected their hair loss with hair transplant surgery. There are options available for people at any stage of hair loss.”
