The Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists comments on how certain hairstyles can contribute to hair loss.

The Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists (www.CanadianHair.ca), a Toronto-based organization offering hair loss treatment for over 25 years, is weighing in on reports that certain hairstyles can contribute to baldness and hair loss.

According to dermatologists, hairstyles which pull the hair tight, such as the popular “man bun” style, can contribute to hair loss and receding hairlines. That’s because these hairstyles put pressure on hair follicles, which can eventually lead to loss of the hair follicle. As a result of the popularity of such hairstyles, traction alopecia, which is when hair loss occurs around the hairline and temples, has grown in frequency in recent years. “Any hairstyle that pulls hair and puts tension on the hairline can lead to hair loss, as the hair follicles are not meant to be tugged or pulled over a long-term period,” says Ken Robson, Founder of the Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists. “And not only do these hairstyles cause a person to lose hair, but permanent scarring of the scalp can also occur in some cases.”

While male pattern baldness and natural hair loss can respond to supplements or other preventative treatments, damage to the hair follicle is permanent. It can be much more difficult to treat hair loss resulting from physical trauma caused by how a person chooses to style their hair.

While some men or women may not see hair loss from these hairstyles, there’s no way to tell beforehand. Unlike with hair falling out naturally, there are no indicators for determining who will see hair loss. Trauma to the hair follicles can happen to anyone.

“Avoiding these hairstyles is the best bet for people who want to retain their hair as long as possible,” Robson concludes. “But for those set on having a ‘man bun’ or other tight hairstyle, keep them as loose as possible. If the hair is relaxed rather than tightly pulled or bound, there is a lesser risk of developing permanent hair loss.”
