The news was released in the October edition of Fertility and Sterility, a journal for medical professionals and scientists. All IVF clinics in the United States are required to report specific pieces of data, and researchers culled through the info provided by more than 400 clinics across the country from 2013. The final result was that pregnancy rates did not decline at all when a single embryo was transferred to a carrier who was less than 38 years old. Naturally, the number of pregnancies involving multiples did decline. In other words, transferring multiple embryos is totally unnecessary for people trying to conceive through IVF.
This is great news for the medical community as a whole, as it can result in healthier pregnancies overall, fewer complications, and fewer difficult decisions for intended parents and surrogates to make. Multiples may still occur via the natural process of eggs dividing, aka “identical twins,” but fraternal twins and multiples are not a concern.
