“Summit Family Dentistry is pleased to present the first annual ‘Summit Smiles Teacher’ award to two incredible teachers,” Dr. Richard Harvey announced on Tuesday, May 19th. “The award goes to both Laura Zlogar and Jennifer Moriarty from Lakewood High School.”Dr. Harvey explained that the Summit Smiles Teacher Award recognizes a local teacher that goes ‘above and beyond’ for their students and their community. "We received so many nominations from our large patient base recognizing several outstanding teachers, but one nomination stood out--that of a dynamic duo who has impacted our community in a very unique way."
Summit Family Dentistry patient Tammy Blue was the patient who submitted the winning nomination, and she shared in part the following about Zlogar and Moriarty, “These two teachers took it upon themselves seven years ago to start a Unified Physical Education class at Lakewood High School, and it is the absolute best program I have ever seen! Not only have these teachers provided a way for the Special Education kids to participate in a sport, but they often go above and beyond to help these kids in all aspects of life.”
Summit Family Dentistry presented the award at Lakewood High School during the Unified 6th Annual Awards Banquet at the end of the school year. “It was an amazing evening," Dr. Harvey explained. "We watched disabled kids from the program come up on stage and share with the audience what the teachers and the experience have meant to them. Each program participant was supported by amazing student coaches standing by their side. The student coaches would then share about how their involvement in the program had been a highlight of their high school career and how it had changed their lives.”
Tammy Blue's son, Thomas, was the keynote speaker at the event and shared the story of his traumatic brain injury and his remarkable progress in the program.
Dr. Harvey concluded, “It was humbling to see what Ms. Zlogar and Ms. Moriarty have built - so many lives have been touched through the years because of their creativity, dedication and hard work. It was surprising to hear that before that night they hadn't received very much recognition for their efforts. They were given a standing ovation by everyone in attendance. It was clear that they serve because they love these kids. It was inspiring that evening to see a small glimpse of the enormous impact that they have had on our community."
The Summit Smiles Teacher Appreciation Award includes free dental care for a year for the recipient. More than the dental care, though, it has become a meaningful way in which Summit Family Dentistry patients can recognize teachers that have meant so much to them and their families.
