Household products are harming children before they’re even born. Choose products without PVC to avoid phthalates.

A study released last month suggests that household productsincluding food wrappers may be a leading cause of asthma in children. Thestudy, led by Robin Whyatt of the Columbia Center for Children’s EnvironmentalHealth, measured phthalate levels in urine samples of over 300 pregnant women;subsequently, over 150 reported that their children suffered from asthmasymptoms.

About the study, Dr. Whyatt reported, “Our study presentsevidence that these two phthalates [BbzP and DnBP] are among a range of knownrisk factors for asthma.” Phthalates are defined by the CDC as “a group ofchemicals used to make plastics more flexible and harder to break.” Phthalatesare commonly found in PVC, which is what many yoga mat are made of, to saynothing of toys, garden hoses, medial tubing, and a thousand other commonproducts.

Prenatal and mom and baby yoga are becoming increasinglypopular, but many moms-to-be aren’t aware that they are practicing on yoga matsthat could harm their children. Open-cell PVC mats contain phthalates. However, there are yoga mats, such as the NOW Athletics ECO TPE Mat, that are made ofalternative materials that don’t contain phthalates.

When yogis close their eyes and become present with theirbodies, they want an experience that will bring them healthfully and peacefullyinto the rest of their day, week, and year. Part of a mindful yoga practice ismaking smart choices about where and how to practice, and about what type ofmat to choose. Avoiding potentially dangerous materials, for the earth and forthe body, should be a central tenet of the yogi experience.

NOW Athletics believes in being present withevery breath and in releasing thoughts about the past and future. Nowprovides affordable yoga for all and embraces environmentally friendlyproduction methods. Create a bright future by taking mindful action now.
