Southwestern College in Santa Fe, NM, Will Begin Offering Certificates In The Field Of Human Sexuality Starting Fall 2014.

The topic of sexuality is still often considered taboo in modern society. However, it is something that plays an important role in mental well-being. As part of their commitment to ensuring that graduates and professionals have the tools they require to work with a range of related issues, Southwestern College will offer a certificate in Human Sexuality starting in fall 2014.

“This is a field that has a continuing shortage of therapists,” says Dr. Jim Nolan, President of Southwestern College. “The goal is to address this need and ensure that people have access to the care they require.”

The certificate course will introduce participants to a range of subjects, including: ethics, the role of sociocultural & familial factors in shaping sexual values and behavior, intimacy skills, diversities in sexual expression, issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity, sexual exploitation, sex addiction, the history of the discipline of sex research, and more. Also, consistent with Southwestern College’s experiential, self-reflective approach to clinical studies, the program will give students an opportunity to explore their own sexual development, attitudes, assumptions, sexual history, dreams and fantasies.

Core components of the 120-hour certificate course will develop clinical skills and cover such topics as: Sexual Attitudes and Development, Theorizing and Thinking about Sexual Issues in Psychotherapy, and Working with Sexual Issues in Psychotherapy. This foundation will then be built upon with choices from elective courses.

“Understanding and being able to treat issues arising from sexuality will open additional avenues for counselors and therapists to help people,” concludes Nolan. “This is good for not only professionals, but for their clientele as well.”

The Director of the Human Sexuality Certificate Program is Ginna Clark, a licensed Counselor and Art Therapist, and a faculty member at Southwestern College.

Now in its 35th year, Southwestern College’s motto is Transforming Consciousness through Education. It is a graduate level institution that focuses on counseling and art therapy. Offering a holistic environment for learning, students undergo rigorous academic work that follows national standards for the Counseling and Art Therapy professions while also afforded opportunities for deeply meaningful interaction and sharing.
